Current Political Situation In Russia


Currently the freedom house rating of Russia is a stolid, not free. The current leader and president of Russia is Dmitry Medvedev. In Russia speculations have been made that the president holds too much power and the legislation is weak. The president can pass laws without consulting either of the houses of legislature. The Russian judiciary system contains the constitutional court which has the purpose of arbitrating disputes between the executive and legislative branches and between Moscow and the regional governments. They can also rule on constitutional rights although in previous years judges have seen their role as protecting the

states interest and not being impartial arbiters. But the judiciary system
has other issues including lengthy pretrial detention which results in one of the highest prison population rates in the world. Some possible human rights violation may be occurring in North Caucasus and specifically Dagestan. Also the current Chechen president has been imposing Islamic law against women in the Russian republic. Freedom of speech is ensured in the Russian constitution but multiple journalists have been murdered with unsolved cases. Civil liberties in Russia have become more prominently, on multiple occasions under the current president thousands of protestors have gone to the streets and been well heard.
